I entered some photos in the Lakeway reenactment photo contest. I would be tickled if some of you would vote for one of them.  You have to 'register" to do so, which only requires a name and an email adress.

The bonus to doing this is that you get to see some really awesome photo entries in the contest! Some folks are great photographers!

My photos start at number 80 in the series... I have 4 or 5 entered. Our family has been voting for one in particular, but go for whatever you like.

I probably won't win, but it's fun to enter!

We need your news---and so far I've received only one submission!

Please send us lots of good stuff---where have you been? What have you been researching? Made any new outfits you want to show us? Any new books you'd like to recommend? Upcoming events we should know about? Recipes? Any sesquicentennial news? What reenactments have you attended? Any camping tips? Photos? We LOVE photos! (Jpegs are the preferred format please)

I know you ladies must have been busy doing exciting things--please share! If we are going to have an interesting newsletter, we must have your wonderful submissions.

The Battalion voted not to go to Aiken this year due to their requests that the event planners make the experiance more enjoyable for reenactors. As a Battalion based organiztion, PSRS will automaticly be apart of the "boycott" of Aiken.  The email we were sent to explain the reasons for the Battalion boycotting Aiken will be posted below. It is up to each PSRS lady to choose to "go" or to "boycott". There will be no hard feelings between any of our members either way you choose.

Subject: RE: question about Aiken
Date: Tue, 2 Feb 2010 18:36:00 -0500

The battalion voted at the Battle of Columbia not to support the event.  It came down to the Battle of Aiken’s SCV camp not furnishing more porta-johns for our Georgia visitors.  We asked for 4 porta johns for 250 people and they said NO!  They would only supply 2 and DHEC requires them to furnish one for 50 people so by law they should have had 5 instead of two.   I hope that they will ask us to host it next year as it was one of my favorite reenactments.

We hope you enjoy it and NOW is a good time to begin thinking about what photos and articles you will be submitting for 2010, 1st Quarter. :-) Please think about events you have been to recently, research you have done, nifty things you have learned, etc., that would be fun to share with the rest of us. It is with great sadness that I write this note.  Our dear friend, Carol Hardman, passed away Sunday morning, dying in her sleep.  The visitation is Tuesday evening 5:30 - 7:30 at Stuhr's downtown Charleston with the services Wednesday at 11am at St. Johns on Johns Island.  I can't imagine her being gone, she was such a bright light in our lives.  We will miss her so much.

On behalf of the Calendar Committee:
We are pleased to announce the first annual PSRS Calendar is complete and ready for distribution! While a daunting and very difficult task (what with all the wonderful submissions), the committee was able to review and select a group of amazing photos representing the PSRS and the Palmetto Battalion across the state.
Calendars will be available at the Battle of Secessionville from Heather King (camping behind the house in mixed camping), Nita Keisler (camping behind the works) or Lynn Dukes (camping on Sutler Row at Cotton Dock Road). The calendars are priced at $10 each. You may pick up and sign for your copies this weekend or contact Nita for additional copies (you will be responsible for payment of these calendars no later than Rivers Bridge or January 31st). We encourage all PSRS members to try to sell at least 2 copies. The money received from the sale of these calendars will need to be returned to Nita Keisler at:

I am working on our calendar project, but haven't gotten to far with it yet because I need for ya'll to submit pictures. I have been through my personal stash and found a few. Jennifer has sent me some on a cd, but that's it so far. Now I know all of you have got some, if you are like me, they are tucked away either in an album, or on your computor, or in an old shoebox under the bed. They don't have to be recent, they can be from sometime back.
I plan on being at Brattonsville, so bring me some pictures this weekend if you are planning on coming. If not, drop them in the mail. Actual picture or cd will work. We can have the calendars ready by Secessionville if we all work together on this, but I need your help. This can be a great annual fundraiser for our general budget needs, our scholarship fund, and for any historical or preservation donations that we wish to do.
Hope to see a bunch of you this weekend.

Revising the By-Laws is a monumental task and Angela Mets and her committee should be commended for taking on this task. It is obvious the committee spent a great deal of time going over and revising these.
All of us need to be prepared at the annual meeting to discuss these proposed changes and understand them in advance. As there are so many additions and deletions, I would like to have a copy of the set of By-Laws you were working from. Sometimes it makes it easier for me to see and understand the changes being proposed. Would you please send me the By-Laws you were working from in these revisions?
Thanks so much!

Yes, ladies, I am nagging. :-) Now is a really good time to pull together something to submit to the next PSRS newsletter, which is due to be sent out next month. Submission deadline is September 15. As editors, we look forward to compiling what you submit. We see this newsletter as a group effort by all PSRS members. If everyone submits items, we will indeed have an interesting publication! (To those who have already submitted material, THANK YOU!)

**The guidelines we offer for submissions are---
The PSRS is a South Carolina-based organization that exists to promote southern history from the southern perspective. There is a ton of information available about the War Between the States era from a northern perspective, but southern views of southern history are in the minority. Therefore, there is a need for organizations like PSRS to preserve southern history from this perspective. Newsletter submissions need to reflect this view to be in keeping with the mission of the organization. So we will be happy to accept submissions that are either from a pro-southern viewpoint or are at least neutral in perspective (for example, the topic of ladies fashions that both north and south wore).

**Submissions ideas can be, but are not limited to---
A variety of items pertaining to the War Between the States era such as short excerpts from old publications, poetry by southern authors or about southern events, fashion discussions/diagrams/photos, how-to instructions, write-ups/photos of your visits to historic sites, book reviews pertaining to the war era, write-ups of reenactments you have attended, resource lists, cooking how-to's from old recipes, tips on campfire cooking, ideas of how to improve our reenacting impressions, PSRS news, your latest exciting project, reviews of seminars/conferences you have attended, history tidbits, if you have reenacting items for sale/are looking for reenacting items, short interesting ancestor stories from the war era, tips on camping comfortably at reenactments, your latest research project...............anything of interest to PSRS ladies and our mission.

**We will be including photos from yesterday's workshop in Columbia. Any of you who made pen wipes--if you would like to submit any information regarding your project, we will be happy to include that.

**Those of you going to the Battle of Atlanta next month, please consider taking your camera and purposely taking some photos for the newsletter.

Thank you so much!

I think they are posting what everyone  is bringing on the bulletin board under the post about elections.  There will be a silent auction there , to help raise funds for the 25th Aniv.   Also we use this time to clean out our closets, so bring any civil war period correct items you want to sell .  Can't wait, to see everyone again.   Heather

I know we have some who are waiting to decide if they can attend or not, and I need to have an answer in order to have enough available writing box kits. I only have a couple left and don't want to see anyone left out. We will have plenty of copy sheets and practice papers, and you are more than willing to sit in and learn, but I can't guarantee pens and boxes and ink to last minute attendees.

Those who have contacted me and confirmed can bring their fee to the workshop where it will be collected. How are those pen wipers coming??? There is a door prize for the best and it's a beauty!

NIGHTtime at the MUSEUM  - History Comes to Life!.....June 5........6:30-9:00 p.m.

Piggybacking off the popularity of the upcoming movie release, Night at the Museum 2, the Charleston Museum plans to host an event to help bring history “to life” and to see our collections in a whole new light (or the dark as the case may be). We’ll have all the curators stationed throughout the galleries to share some of the more exciting stories related to their collection.  The polar bear or the mummy at night? – too cool.  FUN is the key to it all.  The gallery lights will be dim; we’ll encourage kids (and even us young at heart folks) to bring their flashlights to explore.  Guests will be invited to come as is or dressed in period costume (any time is fine!).  We’ll serve a light supper of something like hotdogs and chip or Chic-fil-A. Something of the sort.

Here’s where I need some help.  One of the very cool things about the Night at the Museum movie was all these people from different periods, as well as the exotic animals, roamed around the museum all night.  Attila the Hun walked around with Civil War soldiers.  Cowboys fought Roman soldiers, etc. etc.  While I doubt we’ll be able dig up any Huns, we do have quite a few time periods covered by local living history groups.  We need you!  Please let us know if you might be interested in participating or if you even have ideas to make the evening more exciting.  We’re trying to keep this at a very low ticket price for guests, so I don’t have any budget, just to warn you in advance.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you!!

PNJW Clothing Exhibit June 27-28, 2009!

Ladies,  Janine and Phillip Whiteman will once again be exhibiting some of their collection at the Kennesaw National Battlefield visitors center in Kennesaw, GA the last weekend in June.  The visitors center is open from 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.  Entrance if free but there is a donation box.  It is not yet listed on their web site, but check it out for directions http://www.nps.gov/kemo/   You can also check out www.PNJWcollections.com

If you have seen their collection, you know how fabulous it is!  If you haven't, you don't know what you're missing!  The collection is civilian only but includes men, women and children's clothing as well as shoes, shawls, bonnets, parasols, jewelry, daguerreotypes, CDVs, and more.  As I have said many times, you just cannot substitute seeing the real thing for any book or picture.  The colors, construction details, trim, buttons, etc. are just wonderful.  And, Janine and Phillip are most gracious and accommodating in allowing us to closely examine these items, answer your questions and take pictures.  Be sure to have plenty of film/batteries/digital storage etc.!  I usually have my 'kit' with me...camera, tape measure, linen tester, notebook....and come away with many wonderful ideas.

It is easy to get to and there are restaurants close by so you can make a day of it.  And, just to further entice you, Janine will give you directions to one of her favorite fabric stores if you like!

Make plans now and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me at sherrylkey@yahoo.com

NEW INSPIRATION PHOTOS!  Every month a new batch of original CDVs will be posted to our site. Coming up the First Weekend of April at least 100 more CDVs of ladies, children, outerwear, bonnets!!!!  We plan to add additional batches of original photographs the first weekend of every month so keep checking back to our site  to see if you find your next inspiration.  We will keep adding photos until our site runs out of storage space. We currently have a bit less than 2G still available.  As this feature grows, we may need to take a vote as to keeping these photos available to the general public or if we will password protect them as a benifit of being a paid PSRS member. Right now the photos are coming from Jeannie Rucker's collection and from various web-sources.. It would be wonderful if you would like to contribute any images that you may have to share. We are trying to stay within 1850s tru 1865 with some exceptions for  later photos that may show something of the earlier periods to advantage. THere are several later children's photos on the site now that show striped stocking!  The photos are about 1868-1870, but the stockings were popular in our targeted dates. If you wish more information about this project, email the webmissress.

Subject: reenactor update on Howards

Hi Folks! I am trying to let everyone that I know in the reenacting
community/SCV community know what happened to the Howards. I think a
number of folks know the Howards and their cute little dog Dixie.
They weren't at Aiken this year as usual so we inquired about them.
I'm sure the Howards could use an encouraging note and prayer. Steve
has just retired and with the economy in a downturn, this is not a
good time to lose $5,000 worth of gear. The Howards were at a living

history at Middleton Plantation in Charleston and lost two tents in a fire.

The person watching the camp had walked off for a minute and the wind

blew a spark into a bit of hay which then caught the tents on fire. They

lost the two tents and a lot of antiques among their reenacting belongings

so when he says they are  irreplaceable, he's not exaggerating. Having

just helped put out an encampment fire at Aiken this year, this is fresh

on my mind as to how quickly a fire can devastate.  If you would like to

drop the Howards a note, here is their email.

Ladies,
At The Columns I will start taking photos for cdv's( If my cdv photographer doesn't come).  I will take a couple shots- 1 Plain Canvas Background 2 Natural (Nature) Background 3 Maybe we can pose inside the house???? I will need to ask permission first.  I will download these to my thumb drive and deliver to the photographer.  You can either pay me or do COD.
See you there. Heather

Ladies, I spoke with the cdv gentleman this weekend.  He stated his program will print 8 cdv's to a page .  So for $25 you get 8 cdv's , personalized with your image .  I think I will pose with my husband , so I can have our image together, but I will be sure to make sure none of my dress will be covered by him.  Ladies I need a head count so he can get supplies together.  Once paid,(1) you will be given a receipt, (2)you will fill out a log to describe your image , name, address, email, phone, (3) your image will be taken, (4) I will personal deliver your cdv's to you at the next event.
We will use these to compare ourselves to original cdv's at a later event. In a past email / post I mentioned that I would pay him in advance, but that may not be possible.  If 20 ladies had their cdv's made it would be $500 up front, which would not be possible from me.  So I am asking that cash be paid to him at the time of having your cdv made.  I will encourage him to open the cdv's up to other reenactors, but as of now he wants to just do PSRS ladies, and see how it turns out.  We will be camping next to the battlefield, to insure we have ample sunlight.  Come as soon as you can to guarantee good light. The PSRS meeting will be at 3pm Saturday. This will be the last reminder sent out.  Yours Truely, Heather

a note from the President, Heather King

Ladies, We will be having our meeting at 3pm on Saturday at Aiken.  Bring your chairs and a tea cup.  Wear your best period impression, we will have our likeness taken for a cdv. ( I will be paying for the PSRS cdv's up front).  I need a headcount for the cdv's (so supplies can be purchased)and for handouts for the meeting.  Email me if you plan on attending at hking22@msn.com.  The cdv's we will use at a later event to compare to origanal cdv's  and to give us a better look at ourselves.  The cdv's will be open to any none PSRS members, and gentlemen, they would need to arrange payment up front.  If you have any questions contact me.  The PSRS tent will be next to the battlefield as it was a few years ago.  This will allow for ample space for the meeting and nature light for the cdv's.

  Ladies,
We just returned from School of the NCO in Florence.  The weather was wonderful , and the men were very appreciative of us providing them with info on children's toys/games (Thank you Mrs. Key for the loan of your toy collection). The men took special interest in the toys they could make themselves. Especially the ones they could carve/widdle out of wood  in camp. Mr. King and Mr. Canaday provided info and a look into the gentlemen's wardrobe . A option to use when their is a dance or ball , so they can change into clean nice smelling attire. With that task behind us,I am now working on Aiken.

Battle of Aiken Meeting
I spoke with Daniel Williams at Florence in regards to the schedule at Aiken.  As of now he stated the battle would be around 2pm .With that info I have decided to plan our PSRS meeting for 3pm. (I am compiling the agenda now , so send me any emails concerning topics you wish to discuss.) Which would allow ladies to go to the battle and not interfere with lunch plans. I am looking at 1 hour at the most, unless something comes up. I have heard of numerous persons cleaning out their closets  and selling items at Aiken.  With the number of Sutlers Aiken provides, I myself will be planning to save a little now , so I can shop then.

Flag Project
We have been asked by the Battalion to help them make a flag for Palmetto Battalion headquarters. I spoke with Mr. Blackman this weekend about providing the supplies , so the Battalion can provide the materials they want . He has 2 simple (appliquéd)  designs in mind.  The PSRS tent/fly will be set up for anyone who would like to stop in , sit and chat ,while stitching a few stitches on the flag. We would work on this at events, to create a step into the past. As the ladies did then to help their men. Come dressed and prepared for photos.

CDV's of Ladies
Ladies keep in mind at any event your photo can end up on the WORLD WIDE Web.  You tube, and other photo sites don't leave room for explanations.  On that note lets talk cdv's for period research . A PSRS project to help ourselves with our impressions , and give your guy a little token to carry in his wallet.  If we can get the set built and ready , we will be taking cdv's of ALL the ladies in their best dress. I have a gentleman who has researched the art and has the means to create cardboard cdv's of reenactors. Through out the day on Saturday he will be taking photos.  As far as the weather and the sunlight(light source) I recommend you get your photo as soon as possible to insure the appropriate light.  These will be delivered to myself , then I will deliver to the ladies at the next event where we will use them to compare to period cdv's , to see how we compare to the real thing.  When we are done they are yours to keep.  I will pay the gentleman to do this for us. One print per lady.  Any extras you would have to cover the cost.

Address/Phone Number Change
Ladies if you are not aware my phone numbers have changed. We no longer have a home phone, our cell phones(my c#803-528-0402) have replaced it. Also we decided not to renew our PO Box , my mailing address is now 126 ADDIE LUCAS RD. LEXINGTON ,SC,29073.

Workshops
Ladies also keep in mind that workshops are coming soon.( Lady of the year nominees must attend to qualify.)Spartanburg workshop is in June.  The decorated band hair net workshop is in August in the low country. (This gives you the opportunity to make your own and show other reenactors that snoods are not period correct ,but a easy sell for sutlers. ) Elizabethstewartclark.com has a workshop Shawn and I are planning on going to in Georgia  sometime in the fall.  the date for that one hasn't been posted, but you can print the agenda for the FL one which is the same , but different location.

PalmettoBattalion.org
Ladies be sure to read and keep up with the Palmetto Battalion bulletin board . It provides details of events, current happenings of members, and prayer requests.  We need to be the strength for each other , and be their for each other.  I was saddened recently to learn of a fellow reenactor diagnosed with a brain tumor. The power of prayer is great , but greater in numbers.  Also their is a section for PSRS and civilians at the bottom to place post.  We are a team and the Battalion depend on us.  The men also place post regarding new ladies / lady friends that  are new to the hobby. The Battalion site also provides event rosters(you are responsible for checking it and making sure your unit rep counts you there), dues deadlines(amount & who to turn it into),event dates/info/maps.  This site is open to everyone.

"For those that came before us, and depend on us to tell their story"

Heather King

Ladies t their has been a change in the plans for Boone Hall.  Due to time restraints and low attendance the meeting at Boone hall has been cancelled.  The Lady of the Year will be awarded her plaque after the tea. The PSRS fly will be set up behind the big house, if anyone would like to sit and chat or discuss any issues. Can't wait to smell of campfires.  Yours, Heather

Subject: Memorial Service

Carl Bessinger, a member of the 13th, has been invited to speak at a memorial service of his ancestor Abel Nelson Bisanar. This will take place in Salisbury, NC on November 2nd. Mr. Bisanar is a veteran of the 22nd NC Infantry, and his brother was a veteran of a South Carolina regiment. His remains were buried on land that a Walmart recently purchased, and originally was just going to be covered over with a parking lot. A local SCV camp discovered this and has arranged for the re-interment at a more suitable location. They are in desperate need of reenactors for this solemn occasion. If you would be willing and able to attend please let me or Carl know.

Subject: Re: Rose Hill by Candlelight - Nov 21-22nd
If anyone would like to participate in the event, it is a two night program, on Friday night as well as Saturday evening.  While Cindy is looking for dancers for the Saturday evening tours, we are also looking for volunteers on Friday evening, November 21st as well.  Men need to be in civilian dress as this portrays the house on the eve of secession.  Each room will have participants occupying it, going about their daily lives, so if you do not wish to dance, we have places for you!  Children are also encouraged to attend if properly attired.  I will be offering a meal to participants each evening before the tours get underway.  Last year's event was very successful and the park interpreter, Charles Barreras, has hopes of making this an annual event with our continued support.
If you wish to participate on Friday (dancers and non-dancers) or Saturday (not as dancers), please contact me at itnrnt1864@charter.net or Charles Barreras at cbarreras@scprt.com.

Warmest regards,
Lynn Cogdill

Subject: Rose Hill by Candlelight - Nov 21-22nd

If you or anyone you know would like to participate in this event, please contact Cindy or have your friends/network contact Cindy. Dancers are needed to do some very simple demos for the tour groups, probably just the Virginia Reel. The era is War Between the States, but the Rose Hill folks want the men dressed in civilian attire only. They would prefer the women to be in ballgowns. I guess what they really want is more of a Victorian demo. At any rate, they are short on dancers so if you or friends can participate, it will be appreciated.   Thank you, Holly Sheen

 -------------------
I do have some information to share on the upcoming event at Rose Hill.  First, let me thank you for helping out.  I have never participated in any sort of re-enactment, so please forgive me if I stumble.  Feel free to point me in the right direction. Second, I explained to our host we would only be available on Saturday, Nov 22nd.  He was able to work around us and is excited we'll be able to participate.

Nov 22nd schedule
2:30 - 4 PM
meeting
meal
dressing
4 PM
walkthrough
6 - 9:30 PM
tour groups

Please try to arrive as close to 2:30 as possible.  I know most everyone will have a long way to travel, but at least it's in the comfort of an auto rather than carriage, wagon, or horseback.  You may come in your 21st century clothes as there will be time to dress.

Anyone not in period dress will walk through with groups in order to keep them moving.  So two to four individuals are welcome to do that.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you can to attend.  I need a headcount to send to Rose Hill for food preparation.  If you know of anyone else who may enjoy participating, please let me know as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Subject: Elections this Sunday!

Rena, please forward this-Thanks.

Ladies,

Just a reminder that Elections are this Sunday at Sesquicentennial Park in Columbia.  There are good maps on the Battalion website.  We will be in the same shelter as last year (down the looonnggg dirt road around back).  The Battalion schedule is:
Church 11-noon, Battalion elections Noon-12:30, lunch 12:30-1:30, Battalion Business meeting at 1:30.  I am not sure yet of the PSRS schedule so stay tuned for more on this.  Don't forget to bring a dish to share for lunch (there's a list on the battalion bulletin board) !

The Awards Committee Chair, Angela Metts, asked me to send this out since she is on nights at the moment.  She would like everyone to bring a completed project they have done this year to share with everyone.  Remember to include any documentation you may have.  Also, remember those "What I did this summer" reports you used to do in school?  Well, be thinking about "What I learned this year"...

See you Sunday!
Sherry Key.

Please note the Start time for our workshop. It will begin at NOON at the St. Andrew's Library in Columbia.  The library is easy to find and if you need directions the Richland County Public Library web site has excellent ones.  Their address is  http://www.richland.lib.sc.us/standrews.cfm

Please be sure to eat before you arrive.  Once we get started, we won't taking a long break.

Mrs. Key and I have assembled the materials you will need so just bring a small sewing kit with scissors, your favorite size needles and maybe some black and white thread.  A piece of med. weight uncorregated cardboard  (like a cereal box or cracker box) will be used to make the little shoe.

Subject: RE: Change in Workshop details

Okay, Mark it "Important" and do come if you can:

Ladies,
There has been a slight change in details for the workshop this Saturday.  We cannot have the room at the St. Andrews Library until noon, but we can have it until 6:00.  Therefore, plan to start at noon and please have lunch before you arrive so we can get both classes in.  Bring needle, thread, tape measure, and cardboard (not corrugated; like the back of a pad of paper).

If you have not preregistered, please let Sherry Key at skey@cbh.com or Roseanne Christie at ????? know you plan to attend so we may have enough kits for everyone.  If you find you can attend at the last minute, please do so as we would love to have you.   Remember, there is an antique mall across the street from the library so you can come early and kill some time there (not to mention the budget).

Thanks for accommodating this change and we look forward to seeing you on Saturday!
Roseanne Christie and Sherry Key.

Subject: dues reminder/please send out to all members

Dear Ladies,

It is dues time again for everybody, and so far they have been coming in to me at a snails pace. They must get to me before September 1st if you wish to vote at this years annual meeting, which is September 28th.
The criteria for voting is for you to have attended 3 battalion events (dressed out), and for you to have paid your dues prior to Septmber 1st., 2008. Unit reps must verify your attendance.
We have several things on the agenda this year that we will be voting on. We will be electing new officers, plus there are two proposals to be considered.
Proposal # 1 is whether to allow men to become members of the PSRS, and Proposal # 2 is a by-law wording change that specifies that you must be a female/woman to be a member of the PSRS.
The election of our officers and these two proposals are important issues for our organization, so please get your dues and apps to me before the deadline.

Thanks!
Nita Keisler

I have been approached by a couple of gentlemen that have expressed an
interest in joining the PSRS.  I believe it is time to encourage the male
civilian impression as many of the Palmetto Battalion members are reaching a
point where it makes more sense to do a civilian impression rather than a
military one.  This was brought up at the last staff meeting.  Therefore,
according to our by laws and in order to comply with the 45 day advance
notice, I move to allow men to join the PSRS.  We can either allow them to
join as full members, associates or as a gentlemen's auxiliary; this is open
for discussion.  This will require some changes in the bylaws regarding
wording.

Please let me know if you have any questions at
skey@cbh.com

Subject: Please forward, topic, Joining the Batallion

UNIT REPS.. PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL MEMBERS OF YOUR UNIT RECEIVE THIS.  IT IS IMPORTANT!

Dear Ladies,

I attended the staff meeting for the Palmetto Battalion yesterday.  Among the topics discussed was the importance of all re-enactors who attend events with the Battalion or sponsored by the Battalion to join the Battalion.
Now you may ask yourself, why should I pay $20.00 more in dues when I already pay dues to the PSRS and/or my unit (SCLA OR 13th or 23rd or 11th or 25th or whatever).  The answer is INSURANCE.  By joining the Battalion, in addition to your unit and/or the PSRS, you are covered by the insurance for $5000.00 Medical (for injury which occurs at an event) as well as Liability.
I don't have all the details in front of me but I am sending the Battalion Adjacent a note so I can get them.
So, here's the deal.
1. If you have joined the Battalion through another unit, please send me your name and the unit through which you joined. I will compile those into a list.
2.  If you wish to join the  Battalion through the PSRS, please send me a note and then mail me a  check for $20.00.  Since I am so late sending out this notice, I'll write one check and send it in by the Deadline (July 1).  Request to join the Battalion received (just the I want to join note, not the check) after June 30 will be handled on a case by case basis.

Subject: summer meeting and other notes

Ladies,

Where did the spring go?  For a while, it seemed that we had an event every other weekend and that the season was never going to end.  But alas, for the most part, there are no more big events until this fall.  In many ways, it was a great spring re-enacting season and I enjoyed most of the events (the exception was Sat. at the Columns) and all the people I was priviledged to share time and a campfire with.
I want to thank each of you that attended our last social/tea at BOC and beg your forgiveness for my tardiness.  I was delighted to see some faces that had been absent for so long and to meet a few new ladies.  The treats we shared were delicious and the friendship was even better.
The Summer PSRS Meeting will be held on Sat., June 14. 1:30 at the St. Andrews Branch of the Richland County Public Library.  As much as I wanted to hold the meeting at the Relic Room, I discovered that the education room where we usually meet was being used for the special photography exbit the Relic Room is hosting.  On the agenda for the Summer Meeting are Rules and Guidelines for Lady of The Year, Elections, and a discussion on the Fashion Show/Tea.  All are invited and Officers and Unit Reps are expected to attend.  As a special treat, The Relic Room has offered to set up a tour for us of the Photographic Exibit.  I would like to do this but will only set it up if enough of you express your interest in going with me.  Let me know soon.
Lynn Cogill and Jeannie Rucker are hosting a sewing workshop in early June.  For once, I'll be able to attend since Darlington High's graduation is on Thursday instead of Friday night or Sat. as it has been for the last several years.  If you are interested, contact Lynn or Jeannie for more details.
Back to the Summer Meeting.  Nita Keisler suggested that we consider setting up a scholorship with funds from the Fashion Show/Tea.  Sounds interesting and do able to me.  Think it over and be ready to discuss.  Don't think this is a good idea?  Then suggest a better one at the June 14 meeting.
If you need directions to the St. Andrew's Library meeting site, go to http://www.richland.lib.sc.us/standrews.cfm and there is a map.  It is easy to get to from either I-20 or I-26.
I know I'll see all of you there in fact I am so confident that I reserved the meeting room which will hold 50!
Until then,
Roseanne Christie

Subject: Possible Fashion Show/tea

Dear Ladies,
At our meeting in Aiken, we discussed a couple of different fund raising ideas.  The most ambicious one is the hosting of a Tea/Fashion show for the paying public.  This is something we have talked about in the past but as with many things, we did not take any steps beyond the talking.
But this time it was a little different, we had a lovely lady who said she would spearhead the idea/design/proposal phase of this "Tea".  And so she did.  Within several days, Mrs. Jeannie Rucker sent me a lovely proposal for a tea wonderful suggestions and specifics.  I was struck by it's professionalism and depth.  But more important to this e-mail, I was struck by her first question.  Since I left the letter on my desk at school, I am going to paraphrase the Question.

With a little over 3 thousand dollars in the Bank, WHY DO WE NEED TO DO THIS FUNDRAISER?

I will admit that at first I was a little taken aback by the question.  I knew that I had proposed a fundraiser because we had some type of fundraiser every year.  I knew that we had used the funds from past fundraisers to donate to a number of worthy causes.  But why this fundraiser and why now?
For this, I don' have an answer.  A Tea/Luncheon/Fashion Show will require a large amount of effort from a large number of people.  So, is there one cause where our profits from our work would really make a difference?   Is there a reason to bring attention to the PSRS or to our era?  Do we Need to do this?
I want each of you to think it over and send me your thoughts.  AND I REALLY MEAN THIS..... SEND ME YOUR THOUGHTS AND IDEAS !!!!
Lets get some discussion going.  Ladies, I am not trying to say no to the idea.  I am saying that we need to set a goal and a direction before we get started and it can't be my goal,, it has to be OUR goal.

As ideas come in, I'll share with all.
Thanks,
Roseanne
If you have any suggestions, please send them to Roseanne at  joeyrosie@aol.com

Subject: Cards & Notes

Hello Ladies,
I have been given a new responsibility as Secretary of the Palmetto Soldiers Relief Society and that is to send a card and/or note to one of our members when the need arises (i.e., sympathy, sickness, child’s birth, etc.).  I ask for your help in this endeavor in letting me know who is in need of a card/note.
Please send the person’s name along with a brief explanation of the event to me at louisem@bcgov.net  Also, let me know if their mailing address will be different from the one on the membership roster, say if they are in the hospital or at a family member’s home recuperating.

For those of you who do not have ready access to email, I can be reached via phone at (843) 263-4297.

Thanks,  Louise Murray, Secretary,  Palmetto Soldiers Relief Society

Subject: another forward from Roseanne

Ladies,
After careful consideration of all the comments I have received about the
schedule conflict at Aiken, I have decided that it is in the best interest
of the PSRS to change the meeting time.
Instead of 11:00, we will now meet at 12:45.
This is a few min before 1:00 but it will give us a little time cushion
before the battle which starts at 2:00.
Please arrive on time (early is better) with your stool or chair.
Also, I am in need of a favor.  There are a number of ladies, some old and
some new, who have not received a copy of the handbook on CD.  While
furnishing this should be the job of the unit rep, not all reps are doing
their job. (this will be an agenda topic).  So if anyone has the time and
skill to make about 10 copies of the handbook on CD (Mrs Key, NOT YOU).
please contact me before Aiken. (at the moment I am lacking both the time
and skill).
On a personal note, I will have between 6 to 8 winter wool hoods for sale at
Aiken.  They are Lt. Grey, Dk Blue, tan, Brown, and a Grey, Red and White
plaid.  Even though the weather man is calling for pretty good weather at
Aiken, the evenings and mornings will be cool (cold).
The hoods will be 20 dollars each.  See me Friday or Sat. if you want one.
Just 4 more days

Ladies,
I have been recently informed that we may have a time conflict at Aiken.  I had scheduled the PSRS Annual Winter Meeting for 11:00 on Sat.  But I now know that is the same time as the Fashion Show.  Since I know that some of you will be participating in the fashion show, I would like to ask your opinion about changing our meeting time.  Only avery few of us participate in the battle, so would it be better for us to change the meeting time to 1 or 2 o'clock?  If we meet at one, we will have had time to feed ourselves and our dependants, have a nice meeting, and still watch the battle if we desire?  Just a thought, let me know yours!

Subject: Reiver's Bridge and the spring reenacting season

Dear Ladies,
Having just returned from the event at River's Bridge, I find myself refreshed and renewed and enthustic about the Spring Season.
For those of you who were with me at River's Bridge, you know what I mean.  The weather was perfect, crisp cold nights which lent themselves to fellowship around the fire, beautiful, warm days that encouraged one to wander and bussle about.  The event hosts did a good job and I think that all of us enjoyed the fun, friendship and the chance to catch up with each other.
I am planning my spring season and activities so I want to call attention to a few things.
At Aiken, the PSRS Post Office will be open on Friday for School Days.  It will not be open to the public on Sat. or Sun. but will be available to reenactors to write letters and receive mail. If you have a package for a special loved one, this is the place to send it.
We have our winter meeting at Aiken, 11:00, at the PSRS camping area on Civilian Row.  Bring your chair.  At the moment we only have a short agenda so if you have anything you want on the agenda, please send it to me.
You may have received a note from Heather King about a metal work basket based on Godeys Magazine.  Well if you did not contact her for one, you should because it is a beautifully made metal basket.  The price is very reasonable and she will be glad to show us how to finish it at Aiken.  I don't know how many more she has but you can contact her for more information.
If you ordered a Citizen's Companion, special edition for men and Children, Sherry Key has them and you can pick them up at Aiken.  I haven't had time to study mine, but I will.
At the Columns in March, I would like for the PSRS to have a Ladies Tea or Social.  We have not had a reason to gather together at this event in several years.  We will discuss this futher at the winter meeting.
The Post Office will be open at Sandy Run for the Battle for Columbia.  I am planning to take the Friday off to run this for the School Kids on Friday but I do not plan to have it open to the public on Sat. or Sun.  unless I can get a number of volunteers to keep it open.It would still  be available to reenactors to write or receive packages or letters.   I would also like to have a Social time at this event as well.
I have compiled a list of ladies who need butterfly pin kits and I hope to get them in mail this week.  Please make sure you wear yours at Aiken.
Well that's about all for now,
Can't wait for Aiken and the chance to see all of you

Subject: More thoughts from Roseanne

Dear Ladies,
I had just clicked the send now button on the last e-mail when Jeanne Rucker sent me a note to remind me of several things I forgot.  She must be a mind reader!  So, here are a few additional pieces of info.
1. The PSRS meeting will be held on Civilian Row in the usual place beside where I camp.  The PSRS fly will be up along with the banner. If you are new and don't know where we meet, ask around or email me and I'll attempt to give better directions
We will meet at 11:00 (so everyone has a chance to get breakfast and get the camp prepared for visitors)  Please bring your chair or stool.
2. Please wear your butterfly pin to Aiken.  Not only is it pretty, but it is a great way to recognize PSRS members you don't know by sight.
3. If you do not have a Butterfly Pin, please e-mail me with your name and mailing address and I will do my best to get a kit to you.  I just received more of the blue silk ribbon so everyone should have a pin.
3. We have a number of events coming up.  In Feb. you can attend the event at River's Bridge, the Burning of Columbia activities on Feb. 15 and 16, which are highlighted by the Ball on Friday Night or on Sunday, Feb. 17, you can attend the  Hunley memorial service at Sunrise Pres. Church on Sullivans Island. The next weekend is Aiken ( and I really want to see everyone there!) followed in close order by Florence.( March 8-9)
April will bring is the events in Cheraw, Charleston and Fairview Church in the Upstate.
When May rolls in, it will bring us the Battle for Columbia ( the best camping sites) and the many Confederate Memorial Day observances.
Boy in how, I really am looking forward to another great year and the chance to spend time with many of you.  Hope you are too!!!

Dear Ladies,
Contrary to popular belief, I have not fallen off the edge of the earth.  I
just sorta zoned out for the months of Dec and Jan.  Don't ask,  think it
was because I do not have any big projects to do that I let my mind just go
blank.
But with the first event just days away, I am eager to start re-enacting
again.  So, I thought I would send out a few reminders and thoughts.
1. Can't wait to see your smiling faces at River's Bridge this weekend.  I
am not sure I believe them, but the weather guys are predicting temps in the
mid 60's on both Sat and Sunday.  Sounds like perfect time to pull out the
gear and camp or at least day trip.
2. Miss Metts is collecting items for care packages.  We are reducing the
number of events at which we will deliver packages and the total num.
of packages we will be handing out so the gentlemen don't take them for
granted.  So consider bringing an item or two for her to include in the
packages.
3.We will have our winter meeting at Aiken on Sat. Feb. 22. I really want
everyone in the PSRS to attend this meeting.  We go so long without seeing
each other and there are still ladies who are part of the PSRS that I have
never met.  Aiken will be a great chance for us to get together and talk
things over.
4. This coming September, we will need to replace all the current officers.
Without exception, ALL the officers have served two or more terms in one
capacity or another.  Start thinking who will be the best ladies to take
over these important jobs.
5. Do you have ideas or suggestions for the next workshop?  Send them to
Jeannie Weil or bring them to Aiken.  It is never to early to start
planning.
6. Plan to do a little recruiting at all the events you attend.  With our
by-law change, we can offer friendship and membership to lots more ladies.
Be prepared with business cards and pamphlets to hand out to potential
members.  be friendly, answer questions, offer a helping hand.  Let's grow
our membership.
Well, I think this is all for now.
after all, my brain won't go from 0 to 60 that fast anymore.
I hope to see you Sat. or Sunday

Hi everyone,  I wanted to drop a line to everyone about a project I have been working on . I was going thru my sewing notes and found the instructions for making "The Chintz Work Basket " (Jan 1861 issue of Godey's). Well with the help of my dad (he works in Heat/ Air  sheet metal shop) , he took a copy of the plans and made a basket out of sheetmetal. (The plans call for cardboard, or tin). I then took the box and covered it with heavy fabric , which  I got as scrap at fabric shop in Abbeville.  Of course the instructions state to cover each piece with fabric then sew the pieces together to make the box. Well I cheated , the box is already together and very solid. I hot glued the fabric to the metal , then went back and sewed the seams . That a way it appers I sewed the box together. I added a piece of cardboard on the inside covered with fabric for my button box.(The cardboard was flexable enough to wedge inside) , I added a lid to the button box , a needle book, pocket , pin cushion (made from walnut) also from godey's. I love my workbasket, and will bring it out when we come. We will be at Aiken Thursday morning.  My dad went ahead and made more, after he saw what I made it into he got excited.  If anyone is interested in getting a box (you would have to cover it and make it yours, with your touches)  send me a email and I will bring them out with me . My dad wanted $10 a box due to the metal used in each one. I can't wait to see everyone at the next event. My next project is a pair of slippers.

Ladies, I have flannel material to make warm petticoats, if anyone is interested.  I plan to make them prior to Rivers Bridge.  If you would like one and would like to send me a size request, I will gladly make you one. Please be advised – this is cotton flannel not wool.  That is why I can sell them for $20.  The petticoats will be warm and practical, but period correct material. If you are interested, please contact me at katharris@roadrunner.com or @sc.twcbc.com Thanks,Kathleen

Ladies,

It seems everyone is a bit wearied from the holidays or have company so the workshop for this Saturday, December 29th, has been cancelled.  Thanks for the interest.

Kay will be back for the Battle of Aiken in February and has asked if we would be interested in having some sort of workshop either the weekend prior or following the Aiken event.  Again, let me know if you have an interest in attending, which weekend and if you have a particular topic in mind.

Thanks again,
Sherry Key.

Ladies,

Mackenzie Sholtz and Kay Gnagy asked me to see if there is an interest in a sewing workshop the weekend after Christmas, Dec. 29/30.  It would be in Sumter and it is possible it may be a 2-day affair so if you are interested please let me know if you would prefer 1 or 2 days.  I have no idea of cost at this time.

At this time the topic appears to be ball gowns as Kay is releasing a new pattern next year but they are flexible.  Please let me know if you have another area you would prefer to address   The concentration would be on the bodice and trimmings.

Feel free to pass this along as I may have missed some and reply to me your preference of topic and 1 or 2 days.

Thank you,
Sherry Key.

Lynn Cogdill looking for people to help at Rose Hill Plantation Nov. 17th

We  have an opportunity to participate in an evening program at Rose Hill Plantation in Union on Saturday, November 17th.  I have been asked to confirm how many of you will be able to assist.  Basically, the new interpreter, Charles Barreras, is asking for a number of reenactors for a lantern tour that evening (it’s a Saturday).  He wants people in most of the rooms of the house, including the ballroom, who will do a “sort of” first person impression – pre-December 1861.  I will be on the property in the kitchen and we will be providing a meal for all the participants.  Ladies and gentlemen, this is a real opportunity to use the ballroom as he wants some of us in evening attire, dancing and enjoying themselves.  Please let me know if you would be interested in joining us.  I think it will be a lot of fun.  If you can’t participate, but know of some others who might be willing to join us, please forward this along.  Contact me on my cell or at the e-mail below…..

New Civil War Bus Tour November 17
Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2007 14:54:11 -0400

New Civil War Bus Tour November 17th

Hello All!

The Greater Columbia Civil War Alliance would like to announce its first ever bus tour of the left wing of Sherman's Army.  On Saturday, November 17, 2007 at 10 a.m. the tour bus will depart from the Cayce Historical Museum, located at 1800 12th Street, Cayce, S.C. 29033.

Lasting nearly three and a half hours, the tour will head toward Pelion and then make its way north toward Lexington.  Narrated by Dean Hunt, a history teacher and author of a soon-to-be-published book about the left wing of Sherman's army, the tour will give participants the opportunity to learn about a part of Civil War history that is seldom discussed.  Those on the tour will have the unique opportunity to visit three bridges along the North Edisto River where fighting occurred as well as other historically significant sites in the area and the town of Lexington.

Tickets for the tour are $20 per person.  Please contact us by phone at (803) 217-0071 or by e-mail at gccwa@knappagency for tickets or more information.  Please send checks made out to the Greater Columbia Civil War Alliance to 1717 Gervais Street, Columbia, SC  29201.  We will e-mail you a map with directions to the Cayce Museum.

Subject: By Law Change

Ladies,
It is with great pleasure that I announce that the By-law change was unanimously passed at last Sunday's Meeting.  This does not change anyone's unit affiliation but does allow you the option of being an at-large member if you so desire.  It should help our recruiting efforts since we can now say to the nice lady who is interested in re-enacting but does not have a significant other " The PSRS is a great place to start and stay in reenacting.  Here, take our pamphlet and my card.  I'll be glad to get you an application" instead of having to say "well first you have to find a unit and then you can join us"
If you know of a lady who is or was interested, let's try to get her involved!.
In other news, Lee Bryant is our lady of the year.  It was a very close vote!  Jean Hutchinson and Sherry Key were also nominated.  Mrs. Key declined the honor and it was just a few votes which decided the outcome.
Our good works do not go unnoticed.  I received a copy of the newsletter from the Franklin Battlefield organization.  I left it at home but after the article on the land the city has acquired to help save the battlefield and the one on the Gen. who was killed by the husband of his "lady love"  there was a nice note about new friends from SC.  It noted the donation from the PSRS and stated that we were an reenacting organization which was interested in preserving the history and heritage of the South.  Way to go Ladies! (if anyone is interested, I'll scan and send out an exact copy if anyone wants it.
Many of us are looking at a busy fall  and I am no exception.  But if you have questions or concerns, let me know.
Until our hoops swish together again,
Roseanne

I have two boxes of information all cataloged and in it own folder.  One for women and one for men.

The ladies box has things like clothes, bios, crafts, children, and anything pertaining to women.

The mens, has the same, plus battles, weapons, historys and so forth.

I collected this information over the years as I did the newsletter and the handbook.  I just cannot bring myself to dispose of them.  They have a lot of information and if you did demostrations, talks, school groups, or teach they would help a lot.

Just to read them there is a lot of information to be had.   If you let me know, I will bring them tomorrow and you are more then welcome to them.

Also, tell the men that I am bringing a box of magazines that they are welcome to look though and help themselves.

To Reenactors and their families ,

Time sure flies when you are trying to put a event together.  I wanted to extend a invitation to everyone and their families for the up coming Mary Chestnut event on 10-6-07. Which will be followed by a barbque at our home in Lexington.  I met with the caretaker and hashed out some details.  The reenactment is from 3pm -6pm due to multi reasons.  (Mainly the functioning of the inn.) But it works out in the long run.  It will only be a 3 hour event , which for those reenactors that want to dust off their old clothes to become eye candy ---come on out.  Men use this time to invite your wives, and childern  to join you . It is only for 3 hours.  Afterwards we will have a met and greet at our house to get to know everyone and have fun .

OK , now the hard part.  We will be reenacting the speech from the porch - which brings me to my next problem.  I have the following postions to fill

1. President Jeff Davis
2.General Custis Lee(Brother of Gen. Lee)
3. Rev. Martin
4.Govenor Bonham
5.John Wallus
6.General Chestnut(Mary's Husband)
7. Capt. Johnny Chestnut(Mary's cousin or nephew?)
8.Small unit of soliders to be drilling in the distance
9.Civilian Men,Women, and childern  (as many as we can to fill the street)

We are going for the best we can get.  Jeff Davis needs to look as close to the part as possible.
Mary Chestnut will be played by a lady from Charleston, who does a one women show about Mary Chestnut.
How can we get a hold of uniform jackets to match the above parts? Do you know of anyone that can lend them out for the day?
I have photos of #2,4 , because I had no idea what they looked like.
Please call or email me at hking22@msn.com or (803)755-2201.  The sooner the better.    Thanks, Heahter

Hello everyone,

 October 6th , 2007 (Saturday) Living History.
Civilian reenactors(Women,Childern, Men) , Soliders , Officers needed

I have been working on a project that means a lot to me , due to my family's link to the history of Columbia.  Today I received a formal invitation to put on a living history on Oct 6th (Saturday) at the Mary Chestnut Cottage in downtown Columbia.  The cottage is now a Bed and Breakfest to the public and is filled with civil war antiques and history. The date was chosen due to it is close to the original date as possible.  I am sending out this email to ask for help from other reenactors.  They are wanting to recreate the scene of Jefferson Davis giving his speech off the front porch.  Also the scene of Mary Chestnut peeking out the windows watching the SC troops marching off in the distance.  This will not be advertised ,to insure no unwanted guests show up. At the last mintue the local news crews will be notified , and the owner will have his own film crew their. I hope to use this chance to bring more people into the hobby. He has said we can camp over night Friday if we like.  (Shawn and I will be opening both homes to anyone who comes). Saturday afterwards we will grill out ,back at the house and have adult beverages .  The owner is looking for someone who looks like President Jefferson Davis and  Mr. Chestnut to make it as real as possible.  The website for the cottage is www.chestnutcottage.com   He would like multi ladies to be their in dress to add to the flare.  Let me know as soon as you can if you can attend, so we can get everything ready.  For those who live out of town -- Shawn and I have room for any and everyone.  On the same property we live we have his moms vacant house (2br/2ba) , Not to mention our home 3br/2ba.  And for those who like the smell of hay, we have a barn . lol .
Thanks for everything , I hope to make this very fun and something to talk about.

Ladies
The actual By-Law change is a little longer and slightly more involved than the one I printed on the Absentee Ballot.(I only put Part 1 on the AB)  The meaning is the same but what I sent you does not include the Addition needed for Clarification (part 2) or the Technical and conforming changes (part 3)
When you vote yes for Part one, you are agreeing to part 2 and 3 as well.  I have attached a files which are the entire proposed By law Changes and a copy of the actual ballot we will be using on the 23.  I will have a ballot printed for each person who has paid their duesand attended the proper number of events .If you  use an absentee ballot, please know when you vote yes,you are agreeing to all three parts.

Sorry for the confusion.
Roseanne

Ladies,

It is my sincere hope that each one of you will be able to attend elections next Sunday.  But in case you can't, you may submit an absentee ballot.  Use the one attached to this e-mail, but be sure to fill out the part about the events you attended.  The ballot will not be counted if it is not signed and does not contain the event informationSend all ballots to me at:

Ladies,

As you know, we have an important vote on Sept.23.  The meeting is at Sequitenial State Park, just outside of Columbia.  I have reserved Picnic Shelters 3 and 4 for the PSRS and the Battalion.  Since we usually set up the food in the shelter we use, I decided that the PSRS would use the shelter close to the road instead of the one futher back.  That will save lots of hauling.

At the moment the schedule for the day looks like this
11:00 Church Services
12:00?12:30  Lunch
2:00 PSRS Meeting and Voting
We only have 2 things to vote on this year, the Lady of the Year and our By-Law change.
We will have other business to discuss. If you have anything you want on the agenda, please send it to me ASAP.
Also, I need each lady to check last year's schedule and send me a list of the events you attended.  I need this quickly.  In order to be able to vote, you must meet event attendance requirements and it must be verified.  I'm still working on that part but start me out with a list of the  events you attended.

Thanks,  Roseanne     joeyrosie@aol.com

Ladies,
The SC Event of the 2007-2008 season will be held at Brattonsville, Oct. 27-28.The PSRS is invited to the Dinner and will be a part of the evenings festivities.  Brenda Carpenter will be a speaker on the History of the PSRS.  The Dinner that evening will be 7.00 and we may be asked to provide dessert or something.(I'll let you know).  I will need to know if you plan to eat this dinner no later than elections. (Sept. 23 at Sesqui)  If you have already thrown your name in the hat with your home unit, then you have already been counted.  Otherwise, let me know.  I look forward to hearing from you.

the following is from the 6th website.
http://www.6thregimentsc.org/brattonsville.htm

On behalf of the Sixth Regiment SC Volunteers I would like to invite you to participate in War Between the States reenactment being  held at Historic Brattonsville October 26-28, 2007. The event is being hosted by the Sixth along with the Culture and Heritage Museums of York County.
For those who wish to arrive early to setup in preparation of the weekends event, the site will be open to reenactors Friday at 9 am. Registration will begin at 11 am and will continue throughout the day and night.
Historic Brattonsville is a 775 acre living history museum in the heart of York County, SC. It features the plantation of Harriet Bratton as well as earlier buildings including the Brattonsville female academy and numerous other log, wood, and brick structures from the early to mid 19th century. This allows for the unique ability to get a feel for life in SC in the years before and during the Civil War.
In recognition of the first twenty years of its existence, the Palmetto Battalion will be celebrating its first ever reunion on Saturday evening after the site has closed to the public. Several speakers will be on hand as we look back at the history of the battalion. Everyone is invited to come participate in this momentous occasion as past and present battalion members come together, in a style reminiscent of the old time veteran reunions of long ago, to remember with heartfelt reverence those of the Battalion Family whom the Good Lord has called away and to recognize the accomplishments and achievements of those who have developed and strengthened the battalion over the years.
Important: We have planned for a good old-fashioned barbecue dinner at the reunion so we need to know if  you are coming to eat in order to have an ample supply of food for everyone. Dinner will be $7 per person. Please contact reunion coordinator, David Pearson at If you need further information or assistance please contact one of  the event coordinators  listed below
Looking forward to seeing everyone,

Ladies,
Please allow me to take a few moments of your time to relay some important PSRS information and reminders.

1. DUES....Dues are due no later than Sept.1.  This was part of a By-Law Change we made several years ago to make it simpler on our Treas.  If you have not paid your dues by Sept. 1, you will not be able to vote at our meeting Sept. 23 at  Sesquicentennial State Park, Shelter 3.  We have an important vote this year on a By-Law Change.  More on that in a minute.  So get those applications filled out and send them with a check for $15.00 to
Nita Keisler
617 Pond Branch Road
Lexington, SC 29073
Do you need a copy of the application, check your last newsletter, attachment, or let me know and I'll see that you get one.

2. THE PROPOSED BY-LAW CHANGE..... As all of you should know, we have a major proposed By-law change.  All of you should have received a copy of the proposed change in your newsletter.  If enacted, this change would allow the PSRS to accept members who are not a part of a Military Unit.  This would make it easier for us to recruit new members, and it would eliminate  the "hoops" that some of us have had to jump through to join the PSRS.  The vote will be Sept. 23 at Sesquicentennial State Park, Shelter 3.  If you have questions about this Proposed By-law Change, please contact me.  Otherwise, I'll expect to see your beautiful faces at elections.. But remember, you must have your dues paid by Sept.1 in order to be able to vote.

3. THE ANNUAL WORKSHOP.... Our workshop is less than 3 weeks away.  Jean Hutchinson is going to lead us into the world of homemade period buttons and I am sure she is going to do her usual bang-up job.  Jeanne has told me that 18 places of the 25 spots are filled so make sure to reserve your space soon.  If you aren't planning to attend the workshop, join us at lunch in the atrium for fellowship and friendship.  If you are attending the workshop, please bring a lunch since this not only saves time, it allows us to discuss our thoughts and ideas.

4. CARE PACKAGES AND LETTERS....  The number of men participating in the AP Hill march has grown to almost 100.  Ladies, we need 1st person letters.. Lots of Letters.. We can spend a little time at the workshop writing some but I really need each lady in the PSRS to write at least 2.  If you can't come to the workshop, send the letters to me.
If you have adopted a guy for a care package ( my thanks to each lady who has done this), please make sure you get those to me by Sept. 1. Bring or send them to the workshop or send them by mail.  If you have items to include in a care package, the same deadlines are in place.  If you prefer you may send a small amount of money and I'll buy the items you desire to be included in the packages.  This will save on postage.

5. PSRS JOBS... There are a number of important jobs within the PSRS that need to be filled.
After many years of excellent service, Rena has decided to Pass the Newsletter Editor Torch to another member.  While we will miss the wonderful way that Rena has done this JOB, it is time for one of you to step up to the plate.  Volunteers????
Fundraiser Coordinator... We did not have a fundraiser last year. We need to have one this year. We need one of you to coordinate this effort.  I'll help you get started but I will not do it.
Award and Doorprize coordinator.. Who can fill this job.  Think about it, you get to shop.  Let me know if you are the right lady for this activity.

6. LADY OF THE YEAR.. It is time for us to nominate a LOY.  Think about which Lady you know who has worked to the Benefit of the PSRS, the Battalion, and or the WBTS community.  Write up a nomination for, get her picture and send everything to Angela Metts, our current LOY.
You can reach Angela at
Angela Metts
825 Dogwood Dr.
New Ellenton, SC  29804
sweetpea811_@bellsouth.net

7. FALL MEETING.. Our fall meeting will be on Sunday, Sept. 23.  I'll let you know the time when I know it, but plan for a mid-day, afternoon meeting.  Plan on bringing something for the meal.
We will meet in Shelter 3, the one close to the road on the backside of the lake at Sesquicentenial State Park.  I'll send more details closer to the date.

8. FINAL THOUGHTS,
It has been a busy summer for me and I know the same for each of you.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone again.  If I have left something out of this really long letters, please let me know.
Otherwise, pay your dues, plan to vote, get stuff for the care packages, write some letters, call me some names that aren't fit to print and enjoy the rest of Summer.  School starts for me on Tuesday so keep me in your thoughts.  I assure you, I have you in mine.

Until we see each other again

Ladies

I will try to get this quick update off to everyone while my computer and my brain are both working at the same time.  Please bear with me.

Our Aug. workshop is fast approaching.  Jeanne tells me that 19 of us have signed up and sent in our fees.  Jean is doing her usual wonderful job preparing to lead us down a new road.  Personally, I can’t wait.  But remember, we only have 25 spaces so it looks like we have just a few openings left.  Reserve yours today.

Last spring, we agreed to supply the intrepid men who are participating in the 18 mile AP Hill march in Virginia with care packages and letters from home.  We thought that there would be around 50 gentlemen with the fortitude and stamina to make this march.  However, at last count there were about 80 men signed up!  This is wonderful and will represent the Battalion well, but it means we need to step up to the plate with the makings for care packages.  Some of us have chosen to “adopt” a man or a couple of men.  Others are planning to send items to be split up among several men.  The SCLA is adopting a unit and sending a “unit box” rather than individual care packages.  All these approaches are great!  But with so many men participating, we don’t have to send each man a package, but EACH MAN SHOULD HAVE HIS OWN LETTER.  So Ladies, sharpen those pencils and write a letter from Cousin, Neighbor, Sister, Friend, whoever.  Put it in first person and let me know who you are writing.  I’ll keep a list. But we must remember that all the packages,  package items, and letters must be in my hands no later than the first weekend in September.  I would really need to have all this brought to the Workshop.  Now you say you don’t know what to put in a package.

Click over to our page on Care Packages on this site to see a listing of items and names.. http://www.psrs-csa.com/soldiersaidpackages.htm

Ladies,

The battalion will be conducting the Camp of Instruction the weekend of August 18-19th at the Battle of Aiken site.  I was contacted to see if we would be willing to help with supper on Saturday.  They usually do hot dogs and 'burgers and then have a battalion meeting.  If you are planning to attend and would like to contribute a salad/side dish or dessert please let me know.  Do not respond to Rena but email me directly at skey@cbh.com

If enough want to attend I would be willing to do some sort of mini-workshop, perhaps on plain sewing.  Just let me know if the interest is there and what you would like to do.

Thanks in advance,  Sherry Key.

Hello Everyone,

Summer is finally here and I am almost out of school, so I wanted to take a moment to update the information on summer activities.

1. PSRS Summer Meeting,  it has been our tradition to hold a PSRS meeting in June.  But this year we will forgo that meeting.  I made this decision based on lots of factors including  that many of us are already booked up with activities for June and the fact that we do not have any new or pressing projects we need to discuss or work on.  We will have a short  meeting during lunch during the Aug Workshop.  Send me any info/ideas we need to tend to prior to Aug.

2. Aug. Workshop.  The final date has not been set but it will be either Aug. 4 or Aug. 25.  Jean Hutchinson will be our guide as we delve into the world of BUTTONS.  The plan is Hands-on creation of different types of period buttons.  More on this soon!

3. Sept. Elections.  Elections are Scheduled for Sept. 23. This is a SUNDAY!  While we do not have officer elections this year, we do have a vote on an important By-Law Change.  The By-Law we are seeking to change concerns how we join the PSRS.  I have attached a copy of the proposed change but if we boil it down to the bare bones, what is proposed is that a lady would be able to join the PSRS without having to join a Military unit.  Got questions about this, just call or write and we can go over the change.   joeyrosie@aol.com      803-778-2954
To be eligible to vote, you must come to the election, so plan accordingly.

4. Care Packages for the Sharpsburg, A.P. Hill  March, Sept 8-9.  Start Planning something you can add to a care package or 2 or more for the men who will be making the March.  There are about 50 guys and the plans call for a Mail Call on the first night.  WE do not want the packages to be all the same so we need lots of different stuff to include.  Please consider adopting a soldier and providing something extra special for that one guy.  You may send items for the care packages to the workshop in Aug. or send them to me.
We will be putting together the packages after the workshop.  Don't who is planning on walking?  Write me and I'll send you the list.  Also you may Reserve a Guy in advance, first come, first serve!  (of course wives and mothers's have first choice of their own)
This is all I can think of for now, but if I missed something, I am sure someone will let me know and I'll send our an correction or additions.

Until Aug.     Roseanne

Hey guys/ girls,
After much pursuing , I have made contact with the Columbia
Historic Foundation.  I have expressed a interest in having the civil war
reenactors participate with events in and around Columbia.  The history
around the historic homes and the city it self will be a great place to help
the hobby.  To let people know we are out there , and to possibility bring
new people into the hobby.  My contact stated he will be bringing this idea
up with the board members.  Of course he stated nothing we take place until
a year out due to the planning period.  I'll keep everyone posted as things
arise.  This is a direct link with the foundation  , nothing to due with
Neil Rose , etc..
I must send my thanks to those whom helped with the surrendering of Columbia
. I believe that event opened their eyes to the need of historical events ,
with reenactors . The public enjoys the living historians.

Subject: Sleeve class being offered in Spartanburg

For the ladies who are already aware of this opportunity, please excuse the
echo.  Carolann Schmitt of the Genteel Arts Academy in Gettysburg, PA has
graciously agreed to bring her Academy on the road and will be in
Spartanburg on June 9 and 10, 2007 to present a workshop on sleeve
variations.  This is a hands on workshop which will present a detailed
lecture on sleeves, construction techniques and discussion of original
garments.  Participants for the full session will also be able to construct
as many different custom fitted sleeve styles as time permits.  There are a
limited number of slots left for the  full two day program, please contact
Lynn Cogdill at 864-415-5027 or itnrnt1864@charter.net if you wish to sign
up.  For those who may not want to attend the entire two day series, the
Saturday morning lecture will be available for you to attend and will
include the handouts.  The cost of the full series is $149.00, which
includes all materials and notebook.

If you wish to only attend the morning session, the cost will be $25.00 and
will include the handouts.  I will also need to know if you plan to attend
the morning session only.  The class will be held in the Extended Stay
Hotel's Corporate office training room at 100 Dunbar Street, right in the
center of downtown Spartanburg.  I've attached some more information
regarding times.

I've taken several of Carolann's classes at the Civilian conference in
Harrisburg each year and made the trip to Gettysburg for two other classes.
She is a wonderfully organized and engaging speaker and you WILL come out of
one of her classes with a lot of new ideas.  Besides, this will give many of
you ladies an excuse to take a side trip to Mary Jo's.
If you plan to stay for the entire program, please feel free to contact me
or Jeannie Rucker to help you make arrangements for accommodations.

We hope to see you in June!

Subject: New Bundle of Joy

Carol Corneal is over the moon!  She has a new grandson, Brenden Caleb Moncrief.  Mother and son are doing fine.  9 pounds and 4 ounces.  Born today.

April 1, 2007

Virginia Mescher did an article in Citizens Companion a few years ago on fabric colors and how they display in wet plate images.  It was a great article and that issue sold out quickly.  Well, she has updated the article and it can be found at http://www.raggedsoldier.com/  Go to Virginia's Veranda and you will see the article.  What I found particularly intriguing  was the difference in wet plate/color/modern B&W.

There is also a gallery which is empty at the moment but they are soliciting photos.  We should be able to come up with some nice ones so consider submitting one or two.

Enjoy the article but respect her copyrights.  She is most accommodating if you ask to share but do ask.

Sherry Key.

Ladies,

Most of you know Jerry Morris of the 25th and the Palmetto Battalion.  What you may not know is he is the new director of the Barnwell County Museum!  In this capacity he has asked me to help with some fundraising ideas.  This is in the very early planning stages so at this point I am just gathering information and seeing who is interested in participating.  We are toying with the idea of having a series of four events over a year's time, not just one enormous show.

At this point in time we are considering several options, all involving a fashion show/tea theme but not necessarily limited to mid 1800s.  We would like to include colonial, regency, ante-bellum, Edwardian, flappers, WWI and WWII.  It is possible that you may already have something from those time frames or maybe you were just waiting for a reason to jump to another era to try out pigeon bosoms, puffy sleeves or bustles!  Of course, it should be an accurate reproduction.

We will also need ladies to assist with food (simple tea fare, nothing elaborate) and serving.  Rummage through those old cookbooks and see what pops up!

As most of you know, I am in the middle of tax season so if you are interested just shoot me a brief email and I'll start a list of those interested.

Thanks in advance for your ideas and participation.
Sherry Key.

We will be putting together a dozen or so care packages at Florence.  I have
plenty of coffee and soap, poke bags and some assorted other leftovers, but
new items are needed.  The usual, ginger snaps, peanuts, soft peppermints,
popcorn, baby powder, baking soda, apples, dried fruit, canned meats,
sardines, etc.  Bring something if you can and come to the PSRS Fly around
11:00 on Sat. to put things together.  Bring a stooll, stay and chat a
while.  I will have materials to divide up large packages of product and
paper to write notes and all the other stuff we need for care packages.
While I may do care packages one more time this spring, there is no
guarantee.
We will do nice packages for the AP Hill March (Sharpsburg) in the fall, but
more on that later.
Looking forward to seeing as many of you as can make it.

Subject: Care Packages at River's Bridge, please forward

 Ladies,
In an effort to use up Care Package materials I have on hand, I will be doing some care packages at River's Bridge on Sat.  If you are there and want to contribute something to the packages, please find me Sat.  I will be bringing various sizes of poke bags that we can fill.  The care packages have always been a hit with the men and I will try to keep them going at the smaller events.  There will not be PSRS care packages at Aiken, however the post office will be available to deliver mail and packages from you to a loved one.
the next time I plan to do care packages will be Florence.

I hope I see many of you on Saturday at River's Bridge.

Aprons up for bid

We have one each of the beautiful aprons that were made for the bazzar last May. Click over to the Bazzar page to see a photos of them. Each apron was hand pieced and hand finished. There have not been many of these made so they are very hard to come by. We are now starting the biding via a sealed bid.  You do not have to be a member of the PSRS or the Battalion to bid

subject: special issue of Citizens Companion

"A Special Issue of The Citizens Companion is now available.  I have just finished reading it and it is full of great information.  It would be especially helpful to new reenactors but is also useful to those of us who have been around a while.  It is also very reasonable.  It gets more reasonable the more copies we order.  I would be willing to coordinate a bulk order if there is an interest.  The cost is as follows:  for 1-10 copies $4.50 each + $3.00 shipping and handling; 11-20 copies $4.00 each + $5.00 s&h; 21-30 copies $3.00 each + $10.00 s&h; more than 31 copies $2.00 each + $15.00 s&h.  In other words, if we want to order 31 copies, it would come out to just under $2.50 for each copy!  If there is no interest in a bulk order, you may call 1-800-624-0281, and ask for Rachel.  You will probably have to put it on a credit card.  Please let your ladies without email know and if there is an interest, contact me."

If you are a member in good standing, have met the attendance requirements for 2005-2006, and cannot attend elections, you may e-mail me your vote for Lady of the Year and all other officers.  You must sign your vote and list the events you attended in 2005-2006.  I will accept votes until 7:30 am on Sat. Sept 23.  I plan to check my e-mail at about 8:00 and will print all absentee ballots received by that time.  Of course, I would much prefer to see your smiling face in Columbia on Sat.  For those of you not familiar with Sequencentinal State Park, I will be marking the turn with a small state flag and a couple of balloons.  Be sure to bring something yummy to share for lunch.  The meeting will start at 11:00 so plan to be a little early so we will have time to visit.

Ladies,
I would like to thank those you who have already signed up for the workshop.  I think it will be one of our best ever.  If you have not already let Nita cnfdrtroz@pbtcomm.net or Kathleen  katharris@adelphia.net  know that you want to attend, go ahead, give them a call or drop an e-mail now.. We still have lots of time to add you to list and have lunch and handouts for you.  But please, let us know by Thursday mid-night..
And while I know that most of are huddled against the AC duct to get that last degree of cool air, and none of us are considering ways to keep warm in Feb., I want to remind you that the temp will swing between now and then.  So here is a picture of the hood we will be making at the workshop.  It is toasty warm and keeps the wind off your neck and out of your ears.  I wore mine at Aiken (remember that, rain, cold, more rain) and let me tell you, my head was the only warm, dry part of me.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend.
Be sure to bring your normal sewing supplies, and let me know if you need wool or flannel, I'll be bringing a lot of my stash so an extra piece or too won't be too much trouble.

Dear Ladies,
One of the projects we will tackle at the Aug. 12 workshop is a quilted winter hood.  It is very warm and wonderful on those cold winter days and it is not at all difficult to make.  However, finding wool fabric at a reasonable price may be more of a challenge, especially in the summer.  Therefore, I would like to offer some of my stock of wool fabric to the ladies who are coming to the workshop.  I have a number of colors of wool which I will sell for the low, low price of just $5.00 per yard.  There is not enough of any of these to make a cloak but are just perfect for the hood project.
At the present time, I have
Dark gray, lt. gray, burgundy, red, teal, a lt.gray and beige that has a woven pattern that is very faint and hard to describe, black, tan, and dark blue.  Any of these would make a great hood.  ( I did not realize that I had so many until I organized my fabric stash)
I also have woven plaid flannels which can be used for a lining.  I have a several different colors and sizes of plaids.  The flannels will be a $1.50 a yard.  And I am sure that I have a flannel that will blend with each wool that I have.
If you are interested in any of the wools, please let me know and I'll reserve a yard for you.
Of course, you are under no obligation to buy the fabric until you see it.  I can try to take a picture of your choices and send them by personal e-mail to anyone who is interested.  But act fast, school starts in 2 weeks and once that happens, ...
I hope that all of you are planning on attending the workshop.  Reserve your workshop spot with Nita and your sleeping spot with Kathleen.
Until I see you you,
Roseanne

Ladies,

Those of you who know me well are aware of how exacting I can be when it comes to being correct in our impression.  I cannot, in good consciousness, teach you how to make something that I do not believe will serve your best interests.   To that end, I have some news regarding the fashion bonnet portion of the workshop…

In doing research in preparation for teaching you how to make a bonnet, I have come to the woeful conclusion that my pattern is just not correct enough and even so, we cannot do it justice in 3-4 hours.  However, that said I will be doing a presentation with lots of helpful information and resources, and will have pictures and bonnets on display for you to examine.  If you still want to give it a try, I will have a pattern and directions for you.  I will be there Friday evening and plan to stay over Saturday evening and will be happy to help during these times.

The good news is this will allow you plenty of time to finish your hood and apron so you may take home two completed projects!  I hope this will not affect your decision to attend as we will have lots of fun and fellowship.

Thanks for understanding and I look forward to seeing you there!
Sherry Key.

Ladies,
We have been asked by Mr. Frank Knapp, who organizes Sherman's March into Columbia,
(www.shermansmarch.com), if we will help that event by hosting our bazaar again.  This time it would be on Friday, Feb. 16, 2007 in one of the rooms on the floor above the Relic Room and would be part of a dance/ball.
While I realize that most of us are burnt out with the last bazaar, this one would not take anywhere as much effort. Because he needs to make plans he needs a commitment from us soon so I am asking that each of you vote yes or no and send it by to me by e-mail or snail mail no later than June 30.  Before you make up your mind, please read the requirements below.

We would need to set up a max. of 3 tables.  We have the arch frames, fabric, and state seals and can set up the weekend before the event.
We would need a min. of 9 ladies to work the event, more are welcome.
We can move one table down to the lobby on Sat. to sell items to the public who are visiting the museums and going on the tours related to the event.
We will need items to sell but we have several boxes of leftovers in my garage.  We might need to supplement but not by much.
We can put two of our silent auction items back up for bids ( the battle flag apron and the SC flag apron)
We would need to takedown and clean up our space.
Everything would be indoors so weather would not be as big of a concern.
We would not need to
Plan the dance
decorate for the dance
plan or prepare or serve food
advertise
sell tickets
we would not have baked goods for sale
I know that this event is the same weekend as the Hunley memorial service on Sullivan's Island, however it is on Friday night and the service will be Sat. night. I feel that are enough ladies in the Mid-State area to host this event while our sisters represent us in the Charleston area.  Those of us who were at the staff meeting and were able to hear Mr. Knapp were impressed and we think we can do this.  It will give up a chance to do something with our leftovers and bring more positive attention to the PSRS.
Let me know what you think.
Until I see you at the workshop,
I have the honor to remain,
A Lady for the cause,
Roseanne

Ladies,
At the Staff Meeting last weekend at the Relic Room, Sarah Wooten, curator of the Collection, was kind enough to share with us some of the plans for a new exhibit at the museum.  The exibit will center around Malvina Gist, who as a 22 year old widow, was a bank note signer at the Confederate Printing Press.  The Museum is having a custom mannequin made of Mrs. Gist (a rather expensive undertaking) and Miss Wooten was talking to us about how she should be dressed.  Well, I was so excited about this new exhibit that I talked to the other ladies at the staff meeting about the possibility of our sponsering/making the clothing for this mannequin and once I brought it up, we all decided that it would be a wonderful gesture on our part.  Not only has the Relic Room been most accommodating by allowing us to have meetings there (at no charge) but they have allowed us to see items not on display to the public.
So, I think this would be a great opportunity for us to give back.  The dress and accessories will cost us less than $150.00 and would give us oh so much good will.

Please e-mail or snail - mail me a yes or no for this idea no later than June 30

When the Confederate Treasury moved from Richmond to Columbia, Malvina got a job as a note signer.  On February 7, 1865, she wrote in her diary, "While I cannot sign the bills as rapidly as Nannie Giles can, today I finished up four packages of the denomination of fifty dollars.  Mr. Tellifiere says I am treasury girl woth having, and that I did a big day's work, and a good day's work."

On Februrary 14, 1865, Malvina and the Treasury Department left for Richmond because Sherman's army was approaching Columbia:  "Very little work was done at the Treasury Department in the midst of such excitement and confusion.  We are to remove at once to Richmond."

Malvina returned to Columbia by the beginning of May 1865.  In 1867, she wed Clark Waring and they had five children.  She lived in Columbia for the rest of her life and was known as an accomplished author and pianist.

Ladies,

In just 3 weeks we open the Grand Bazaar at the Battle for Columbia.  I think we have most things in place but I still need some information and commitments from some of you.  I'm going to be writing as I think and remember, so stay with me and read to the end.

Camping,
If you would like to camp at the Bazaar, I'll be setting up on Thursday night and I have asked Tommy to set aside some prime relistate for the PSRS.  It is just beyond the footbridge, near necessary rooms and water, we will be on both sides of the road.  I would appreciate it if you can let me know if you are camping so I can make sure we have enough space.

Baked Goods,
Louise sent out an e-mail asking who was planning on bringing something yummy but has not received many responses.  Ladies, here is the chance for those of you who say you don't sew or aren't crafty, to shine.  Bake something and bring it on Sat. or Sunday.. Don't know what to make, ask Louise at louisem@bcgov.net

Period Doll.
Is anyone out there making our doll another dress?  She really needs a daydress. Jeannie Rucker did an outstanding job getting our doll and making the pattern and making 2 dresses (one work and 1 ball) but what well-dressed doll doesn't need a couple more.
The doll also has a lace shawl, a lace headress, a bed and pillow, a Bible, a quilt, a shawl, a couple of necklaces, a watch, a pinner apron.  Do you have something to contribute?  Let me know.

Lemonade.
Lynn Charles has offered to contribute papercups, beverage napkins, small paper plates, doilies.  Thanks so much Lynn.  LeAnn Calhoun has offered to bring a cooler of Ice.  Thanks LeAnn.  However, we need to purchase the Lemonade mix.  The PSRS will reimburse but who can get it at a good price at a place we can return extra unopened containers.  We will need enough mix to make 20 to 30 gallons ( at least, I think).  Who can help with this?
We will probably need at least 1 or 2 more big coolers of ice on Sat and Sunday.  Who can bring this?  PSRS can reimburse.
Brenda Kittrell is going to bring her glass jug with spout.  Carol Hardman, can you bring yours as well?  Sherry Key, please bring your punch bowl.  Do you have a ladle for that?
I'll bring a 5 gal. pot to mix in.

Dirt
I need about 2 quarts of dirt from Morris Island and or  Secessionville Battle Site.
Can any of you Charleston Ladies help.  If you can get it and Mail it ( no more than 2 lbs)
I'll pay for the shipping.  Please let me Know.

Cash Boxes..
We need 2 cash boxes for the PSRS tables.  Who has one they can bring?
Change..
Each unit that is hosting a table needs to stock their cash box with some change.  Make  a note of the amount so you can get it back before we count up our sales.

Security of Items on Sat. night.
I plan to put any unsold items in my car on Sat. night and pull them back out on Sunday.  Each unit that is hosting a table needs to make similar arrangement.

Pricing of items,
Please do this before the Bazaar starts.  Remember, we can always reduce prices but it is difficult to raise them.

Set up on Friday and School Day.
Kathleen Harris has offered to come help with school day and set up on Friday.  Anyone else?  I'd love to have you especially if you can sing Goober Peas better than I can.  We will be teaching this to the kids as part of our Bazaar Experience.

Press Releases.
Do you have a hometown paper?  Did I send you a Press Release?  If not, let me know so I can get it out ASAP.  Also, send it to papers in towns near you , for example, I am sending the press release to Camden and Manning as well as Sumter.

Decorating Supplies,
Here is a list of items that may be helpful.. Staple Gun (manual, not electric), Cordless Drill with screwdriver bit (Phillips), pins, heavy duty tape, string, hammer, Greenery, flowers, big tablecloths ( the PSRS will be supplying fabric for an underskirt in red, off-white, and blue but what goes on top is up to you, the colors you will be using will be determined on a first come basis)

Hoops,
Please don't plan to wear large hoops while working behind the tables,  While ladies in daydresses will sell more, Ladies in hoops will take up lots of space.  Please wear corded peticoats or shrink your hoops down as much as possible.
What have I forgotten.. Let me know.  My brain is on overload and I am already making lists and stacking boxes to take with me.

Call or Write  if you have suggestions, ideas, or can help with any of the problem areas.  I can't wait for the Grand Opening of the Grand Bazaar.

For the Cause,
Roseanne

Ladies,
I just received the registration form and information on the conference to be held in Nashville, TN August 4-6.  It is quite reasonable and since space is limited I would suggest you register soon.  It appears there are some topics for gentlemen also so pass the word if you know anyone who might be interested.  For what its worth, I am definitely planning to go.  Hope you can join me.

Ladies,
This information from Tommy Rollings may or may not change your plans for May 6.  Please remember that for many of us, we will be busy setting up and opening the Bazaar that morning.  However, I thought I would share this.  It comes from the Battalion Bullentin Board

All,
The S.C. Division Confederate Memorial Day Chairman Frank Berry announced today that there will be no SCV service at the Statehouse on Saturday, May 6th. Sadly, the individual responsible for obtaining the permit failed to do so in a timely fashion. The group who got the permit -ABATE- has refused to allow the SCV to use the Statehouse on that day or to move their event to another day. Frank is putting together an SCV program that will take place entirely at Elmwood, and in my opinion, it will be a good one.
Those of you who believe it is important that we be seen at the Statehouse to show our respect for the Confederate soldier will have two other chances to do just that. The Wade Hampton Memorial coming up on Saturday April 8th will be covered by the print and television media. Info on it can be found under my post "Wade Hampton Memorial service."
Additionally, The Lt. Gen. Wade Hampton Camp SCV, of which I am the proud Commander, has a permit to be at the Statehouse on the actual Confederate Memorial Day, May 10th. I invite all of you to come stand as honor guards at the Confederate Soldiers Monument and the Wade Hampton monument on the Statehouse grounds.
We must seize the opportunity to turn a great loss into something positive!
We are working to get permission for artillery salutes as well as rifle salutes at the Hampton Memorial.
Please contact me for info. I will post details here as I become aware of them.
Thank you in advance,
Tommy Rollings

Ladies,
This is a reminder of the staff meeting on Sat., Feb. 11 at theRichland County Public Library in Columbia.  The Library is just down the street from the capitol.  Our meeting starts at 1:00 so try to get there a little early so we can start on time and maybe have a little daylight left to do some "big city" shopping or just visiting.

I am asking the Unit reps to bring the following information with them:
1. a list of all ladies in their unit who have turned in their raffle tickets, along with the ticket stubs and money.
2. a list of all items started and/or completed for the Bazaar
3. a list of any accessories that have been made by members of their unit for the PSRS doll. ( see the web site if
you don't know what I am talking about)
4. A written list for any ideas or items that should be on the agenda for Aiken.

I am planning on the Bazaar planning to be the main topic for our Aiken meeting so bring those thoughts, ideas, suggestions with you.

I look forward to seeing each of you at the meeting.

Roseanne

Ladies,
I just took a look at a calendar and realized that Aiken is only a month away.
HAVE YOU SOLD ALL YOUR RAFFLE TICKETS YET?

Our raffle is the only real fund raiser for the PSRS and this year we were so lucky to have been given the lovely Carolina Wren pin as our prize.  So, it is important that each of us sells our tickets.  Do you need more tickets?  Just write me and I'll get them to you ASAP.

Ladies, please remember that you are to turn in your tickets and money to your unit rep.
Unit Reps, I'll be asking for a report at the Staff meeting and at the General meeting.

We will be drawing for the pin at Aiken.

I am looking forward to seeing each of you soon.

Ladies,
I am pleased to announce that the Winter PSRS Staff Meeting will be held on Feb. 11. at 1:00. The meeting place is the Richland County Public Library Main Branch in Columbia at 1431 Assembly Street. We will be using the first floor Bank of America conference room. All ladies are invited and encouraged to attend, however, I really need
all unit reps to attend this since we will be working on the plans for the Grand Bazaar.  Unit reps at the Staff meeting will have first pick of the States their booth will represent.  ( I have the State Seals ready for the Units to select, each table will represent 2 states).   If you have any item that needs to be on the agenda for the Staff
meeting, please send it to me by Thursday, Feb. 9, so I can get agenda typed and printed.
I am looking forward to seeing each of you at this important meeting.

Cockage Assy

All of our members should have received a kit to make a Cockade.  Please assemble yours and give it to your unit rep. or we will be collecting them at the Tea Party at Secessionville next week..

Palmetto Cockades:

A presentation will be held at Secessionville. \. As many members  of PSRS as possible at Secessionville. We will present the Palmetto Cockades to the current Palmetto Battalion officers and staff, then to the new Administration. The bag of cockades will be subdivided by Unit and each unit will have a card inside stating who the cockades were made by and also a card with the Battalion person’s name on it. We will do the presentation directly after the Battle at Secessionville. She asked that we not tell the guys what they will be receiving. They will only receive one if they have voting rights. Ms. Blitch said that we need to have some sort of sound system on the field so everyone can hear what is being said.

Mrs. Key asked if there were any left over she would like to have two for guys who have been past officers but who would not have voting rights this year. Miss Christie asked her to email her with the names.

Identification/Butterfly Pins

A sample of the pin the Ladies of the PSRS will wear as a method of identification was passed around. Miss Christie gave the Unit Reps a materials kit for each member of their unit. The kit

contained silk ribbon, a brass butterfly, and instructions. Each lady is asked to make her pin and wear it for the Social and Presentation Ceremony at Secessionville.

Dear Ladies,
Here's a little good news I thought I would pass along.  Mr. Grainger McKoy has donated a Sterling Silver Carolina Wren Pin in a beautiful wood presentation box for us to use as our prize for this year's Raffle.  The pin has a retail value of $120.00 so this is not a small donation.  I have already designed the tickets and am planning to start distribution at elections. I really could use some help with this raffle so let me know if you are willing to devote a couple of hours to the cause.  If you would like to see the pin, visit Mr. McKoy's web site at www.graingermckoy.com or if your computer will let you, see the picture below.
I am looking forward to seeing you on the 22nd.  The main meeting will start at 1:00 but please remember that we have Sara from the Relic Room coming at 10:30 to talk to us about period tobacco pouches and she is bringing some originals.
Until then,
Roseanne
PS. The pin is about 1 1/2 inches high.

Ladies,
I spoke to Louise Murray today about her daughter Caitlin.  As most of you will recall, Caitlin is (was) a student at Tulane University in New Orleans.  She, with Louise helping, was at Tulane getting settled into her dorm when the order to evacuate was issued.  So, thinking she would be back soon, she  threw a few outfits into a suitcase and drove back to Beaufort from N.O. Louise reports that this was a 19 hour trip. Well, we all know what happened next.  Katrina.  Caitlin will be unable to return to Tulane this semester, so she has transferred to Duke University in NC.  While most  of her possessions remain in N.O., Louise reports that Caitlin is starting to settle in at Duke.  She moved in to her dorm about a week ago and has already started classes.
I know we all are glad that one of our own is safe and moving forward with her life.  I am sure that it will be a difficult adjustment but Caitlin is a strong, intelligent young lady.  Let's keep her in our thoughts and prayers.  I know that Louise and Caitlin will appreciate that from us.
Until I see you again,
I have the honor to remain,

Dear Ladies of the PSRS,
While I was at Aiken for COI, Ken Howle and Jackie Dawkins of the 8th SCVI presented me with a check for the PSRS in the amount of $100.00 and a letter of appreciation which is, as the commercial says, priceless.  I am sending it out to each of you as a reminder that what we do is noticed and appreciated.  So grab a hankie and read on.

Aug. 15th, 2005
Dear Miss Rosie,
At our last meeting held August 13th of this year, the members of the 8th SC Vol. Infantry voted to make a donation to the Palmetto Soldier's Relief Society.  Many of our members expressed their warmest thanks for the work and tremendous efforts that the PSRS has displayed over the years in their support of the Palmetto Battalion.  The Society has time and again gone beyond the call of duty to not only accurately portray the homefront during the War of Northern Aggression, but also to complete whatever the membership of our beloved organization has asked of it.  It's accomplishments have not only preserved the cherished legacy of our ancestral "Southern Girls". but have also made our hobby much more enjoyable and authentic.
We, the members of the 8th SC Volunteer Infantry, offer much deserved recognition to all the wonderful ladies of the Society.  It is our sincerest hope that the Society will grow and prosper as it continues to preserve the history of the South and serve the members of this Battalion.  As always, we are indebted to the glorious work done by our southern women, without which as Robert E. Lee once said: "...not a man among us could stay the course."
Please find enclosed a check for $100.  We understand that no dollar amount can be placed on the invaluable service you and your ladies have done for this organization over the years, but perhaps it can assist in funding future activities for the Society.
Please pass along our apparition to the members of the Society and hope to see you all in camp very soon.

With Warmest Regards, I am
Ken Howle

Please offer your thanks when you see any of the gentlemen of the 8th.

Good Morning Ladies,
August has managed to sneak up on me so September 1 isn't far behind.  You may ask yourself, why is Roseanne sending me a note about September 1?  Well, as we all know, that is the date when all PSRS Dues are due in order for you to be eligible for voting rights at this year's elections.
To help you get your dues in on time, I am attaching a copy of the Membership Application.  A new application is to be sent in along with your check.  This provides an efficient way for Jeannie and Louise to update our roster and helps us ensure that you are given credit for paying your dues.  Please fill out the application and send it to Jeannie.  Don't wait till the last  minute, go ahead and do it now.  It would be helpful if you would write PSRS DUES in the memo section on your check.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to have an application with each check.  If you have problems printing the attached application (it should only take one page), e-mail me and I will mail a copy to you ASAP.  I am asking Unit Reps to contact each member of their group to make sure they have a copy of the application.  Applications can be signed by the Unit Rep or their Unit commander.
I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the Workshop next weekend.
 Until then,
I have the honor to remain,
