This scholarship was established to recognize students that may be average
academically, but have also had a positive impact, either in their school, community,
employment, historical organizations, or through other activities.
Two awards will be presented, in the amount of $250.00 each.
Purpose: To grant a scholarship(s) to a qualified individual(s) for undergraduate studies at an accredited college, university, or technical school.
Scholarship Committee: This scholarship is administered by a committee composed of officers and members of the Palmetto Soldiers Relief Society.
Eligibility:
The parent(s) or legal guardian(s),grandparent(s) of the applicant, or the applicant themselves, must be (a) current member(s), in good standing, of either the Palmetto Soldiers Relief Society or the Palmetto Battalion for at least one year. Written verification of membership is required from the head officer of respective organization.
Requirements and Qualifications:
A transcript of the applicant’s high school records and grades, to date. A C+ GPA (2.5 on the 4.0 scale) is required.
Provide a copy of the applicant’s scores on the SAT/ACT tests, or placement tests if attending a technical school.
List of school activities, honors, and awards.
List of other activities and organizations ie: community, civic, historical.
Proof of acceptance to an accredited college, university, or technical school.
Character references from two people that have known the applicant for at least four years, along with their contact information. These individuals may not be members of your family.
Information on employment status, if any, with contact information.
A letter outlining your career goals and plans for the future.
Provide a current photograph of yourself.
A basic outline of anticipated expenses per year (tuition, room/board, books, etc.)
Prepare an essay, with a minimum of 500 words, on the following topic. Essays may reference current events, published books, magazines, and/or newspaper articles, as well as express personal opinions. Essays must include a bibliography of cited sources

In subsequent years, if a recipient wishes to renew the scholarship, and the monies are allotted by the PSRS, the recipient must notify the scholarship committee, in writing, of their desire to do so. Proof of continued enrollment, or any changes in schools, and a transcript of grades showing maintenance of a 2.5 GPA must be provided. Eligibility must also be verified.
Criteria for Selection:
1. Essay (50%)
2. GPR/GPA on a 4.0 scale (10%)
3. School Activities and Awards (10%)
4. Employment (10%)
5. Participation in community, civic, and historical activities and organizations (20%)
Deadlines:
Application must be received by the committee, in it’s entirety, by April 30, in the year of bestowal.
Applicant(s) that are awarded the scholarship will be notified by May 31 of the same year.
Renewal request and other requirements must be received by the committee by April 30.
Financial need is not to be considered, nor shall any information be requested pertaining to income.
Financial aid information from the college scholarship services are not required.
There is no discrimination as to the race, color, religion, gender, or national origin of the applicant.
All essays become the property of The Palmetto Soldiers Relief Society.
Applicants that fail to follow all procedures or meet all qualifications will be disqualified.
